Cockroach Control in Aude, Hérault & Pyrénées-Orientales
In my opinion, cockroaches are one of the most upsetting pests to find in your home - second only to bedbugs, maybe.
These creatures come in many different species, and correct identification is key to getting rid of them.
If you're from a more northern climate like the UK, you might not be used to some of the cockroach species we get in Occitanie. In colder regions, the German cockroach is almost the only type you're likely to see, and they live exclusively indoors.
But here in Herault, Aude, and the Pyrenees Orientales, there are also many species that live outdoors, and can come inside for food or shelter.
Gecko Pest provides professional cockroach identification and treatment throughout Aude, Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales. We identify the species and likely source of the problem before deciding how it should be treated.
For German cockroach infestations, our standard treatment uses professional gel bait, applied directly to the areas where cockroaches live and forage. Other species and exterior cockroach problems may require a different approach, including targeted residual treatments where appropriate.
German cockroach treatment starts from €300 and includes two visits.
If you're not sure what kind of cockroach you've found, send us a clear photograph by WhatsApp , text, or email. We can often identify the species before arranging a treatment.

Oriental cockroaches (Blatta orientalis) filmed at a property in southern France. Unlike German cockroaches, this larger species is often associated with damp areas, drains, basements and the exterior of buildings.
How We Treat Cockroaches
The right treatment depends on which species of cockroach you have. German cockroaches living in a kitchen require a very different approach from Oriental or American cockroaches entering from drains, basements or exterior areas.
German Cockroaches: Gel Bait, Not Routine Spraying
For German cockroach infestations, our preferred treatment is professional cockroach gel bait.
Small placements of bait are applied close to the places cockroaches hide and feed, including cracks and crevices, cupboard hinges, around appliances and other harbourage areas. The cockroaches consume the bait and carry its effects back into the population.
German cockroaches generally should not be treated with repellent insecticide sprays. Spraying can scatter cockroaches away from established harbourages, potentially spreading the infestation into new areas. It can also contaminate bait placements and make the bait less effective.
Gel bait has another major advantage in occupied homes: when professionally applied according to the product label, it presents very low exposure to people and pets and does not normally require you to leave your home during treatment. The bait is placed in small amounts in protected locations inaccessible to normal contact.
For established German cockroach infestations, our standard service includes two treatment visits, allowing us to inspect the property, apply bait and then reassess activity and treat remaining harbourages.
Brown-Banded Cockroaches
Brown-banded cockroaches can also be treated primarily with professional gel bait, but their behaviour is different from German cockroaches.
They tolerate considerably drier conditions and may harbour throughout a property rather than concentrating around kitchens and bathrooms. Treatment therefore requires a wider inspection, including furniture, cupboards, electrical equipment and areas higher on walls.
Oriental and American Cockroaches
Larger cockroach species can require a different approach.
Oriental and American cockroaches are often associated with drains, basements, cellars, service areas, sewers and the exterior of buildings. In these situations, simply placing bait in a kitchen may do little to address the actual source of the problem.
Depending on what we find, treatment may include gel bait, monitoring, targeted residual insecticide sprays, treatment of exterior harbourage areas and recommendations for sealing entry points or addressing drainage and sanitation issues.
Unlike German cockroach treatment, some of these situations can require spraying. If an interior residual insecticide treatment is necessary, we will explain any preparation and re-entry requirements before treatment.
Outdoor Cockroaches
If the cockroach you've found is an outdoor species such as an Ectobius, you may not need an indoor pesticide treatment at all.
Occasional individuals can enter through open windows, doors and other gaps without establishing an infestation inside. Where outdoor cockroaches are repeatedly entering a property, we can look for the source and recommend exclusion, environmental changes or, where appropriate, a targeted exterior treatment.
This is why we identify the cockroach before deciding how to treat it. The goal isn't simply to apply insecticide — it's to use the treatment that makes sense for the species.
Cockroach Control FAQs
Does seeing one cockroach mean I have an infestation?
Not necessarily. Some cockroach species live and breed indoors, while others naturally live outside and occasionally enter homes through windows, doors and other openings.
A German cockroach indoors is much more concerning than finding a single outdoor Ectobius. If you're unsure what you've found, send us a clear photo and we can often identify the species before arranging a visit.
How do I know if I have German cockroaches?
German cockroaches are relatively small and light brown, with two dark parallel stripes immediately behind the head. They are commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, particularly around appliances, cupboards and other warm harbourages close to food and water.
Seeing small nymphs, multiple cockroaches or cockroaches during the daytime can indicate an established infestation.
Why am I seeing cockroaches during the day?
Most pest cockroaches are primarily nocturnal. Daytime sightings can occur when an infestation is large enough that cockroaches are being forced out of preferred harbourages, although there are other possible explanations.
The species matters too. An outdoor cockroach active during the day doesn't necessarily indicate an indoor infestation.
Should I spray cockroaches myself before you arrive?
If you suspect German cockroaches, we recommend that you don't spray them.
Repellent insecticides can scatter German cockroaches away from their established harbourages and potentially spread the problem into other areas. Sprays can also contaminate professional gel bait and make it less attractive to cockroaches.
If you've already used a spray, tell us what product you used and where you applied it.
Is cockroach gel bait safe around children and pets?
Professional cockroach gel is applied in very small quantities in cracks, crevices and other protected locations, away from normal contact by children and pets.
We select placement locations carefully and use the product according to its label instructions. Let us know before treatment if you have children, pets or any other particular concerns about where bait can be placed.
Do I need to leave my home during cockroach treatment?
For our normal German cockroach gel-bait treatment, no. You can usually remain in the property while the treatment is carried out, and there is no standard six-hour re-entry period as there would be with some insecticide spray treatments.
If your cockroach problem requires an interior spray treatment, we will explain any preparation and re-entry requirements beforehand.
How many treatments will I need?
Our standard German cockroach treatment includes two visits. The second visit allows us to assess the response to the initial treatment, identify remaining activity and apply additional bait where necessary.
Other cockroach species may require a different programme depending on the source, extent and location of the problem.
How much does German cockroach treatment cost?
Our professional German cockroach treatment starts from €300 and includes two visits.
Larger properties, commercial premises or unusually extensive infestations may require additional work. We will explain the proposed treatment and price before beginning.
What should I do before cockroach treatment?
Good sanitation helps cockroach bait work effectively. Remove accessible food, clean up crumbs and spills, empty rubbish regularly and avoid leaving pet food out unnecessarily.
You do not need to empty every cupboard or dismantle your kitchen unless we specifically ask you to. We want to inspect the areas as they normally are so we can identify where cockroaches are actually harbouring.
Will cleaning remove the cockroach bait?
The gel is placed in small, targeted locations rather than spread across exposed surfaces. Normal cleaning can continue, but don't scrub away or spray over bait placements.
We'll show you what to avoid disturbing after treatment.
I keep finding large cockroaches near a drain. What should I do?
Large Oriental and American cockroaches can be associated with drains, sewers, basements, cellars and other damp areas.
In these situations, treatment may need to address the source rather than simply treating the room where a cockroach was seen. Send us a photograph if possible and tell us where you're finding them.
Do you spray for Oriental and American cockroaches?
Where appropriate, yes. Oriental and American cockroach problems can require targeted residual insecticide treatment, particularly when activity is associated with exterior harbourages or structural areas.
Depending on the situation, we may combine spraying with bait, monitoring, exclusion and recommendations for addressing sanitation or entry points.
I keep finding cockroaches coming in from outside. Do I need pest control?
Possibly not. Outdoor species such as Ectobius naturally live in vegetation and can occasionally wander or fly indoors, particularly during warmer weather.
If they're entering only occasionally, an indoor insecticide treatment may be unnecessary. For persistent problems, we can investigate where they're coming from and consider exclusion measures or a targeted exterior treatment.
Can cockroaches come from another apartment?
Yes. In apartment buildings, cockroaches can move between units through service penetrations, pipework, wall voids and other connected areas.
Where German cockroaches are established in multiple apartments, treating one unit alone may not provide lasting control. Building-wide coordination can sometimes be necessary.
Do you treat cockroaches in restaurants and other businesses?
Yes. We can treat cockroach problems in restaurants, holiday accommodation, shops and other commercial premises, as well as houses and apartments.
Commercial cockroach control may require additional monitoring and follow-up depending on the property and level of infestation.
